Change of engines
Hi there Fellow WotA Fans,
Let me share in this post the engines I used in the past years. If I remember correctly, the first engine was Unity. It's a great engine (even around 8 years ago), but it seemed like an overkill for this kind of game. For a brief moment I considered Unreal engine, but it would've been even more overkill... ier. Then I found Corona SDK (which is called Solar2D now, no more virus-reference there), which was perfect at the time: it was a simple 2D engine with all the functions I needed for this game. Thanks for the Corona team (still not the virus) for letting me begin to realize my game!
So why switch to Defold? It's another great Lua-based engine, easy to use, and there's a company behind it which actually uses it for making games (it's King). Seems like a good idea to use an engine made for creating games, and it's regularly updated for current standards. The support is also great, it's very helpful when you're in need of an expert or two.
Sometimes it's a bit tough to migrate all the things that are already done and working, even between two Lua-based engines. In a bit more personal level it's tough, because there's still a lot to do to even reach the level of completion the project was in about 3 weeks ago. And I can imagine more productive ways to spend all this time. But hey, nobody forces me to change engines! Since I learn Defold while doing an actual game, it's more exciting. Who knows, maybe after publishing this game, I'll start another one... using only one engine!
